  • Paramore - Riot!. Female fronted band with adult contemporary rock sensibilities as mixed by the drummer.
  • Lecrae - Rebel. Some standard hip-hop production, but denser mixing giving more meaning to his points of view. Jeremy camp could learn a thing about mixing vocals on this one.

This DTV broadcast thing is really messing up the country. First the government runs out of cash to reimburse people for the DTV D/A converter boxes and now Sennheiser has to swap out their wireless that operate between 698 - 806 Hz - which is incidentally the frequency that the Digital TV broadcast operates on starting Feb. 19, 2009.

The rebate applies ot mostly Evolution G2 series up to $2000 (depending on model) minus how long you've owned the gear. Last receipt date for the gear to be elgible is December 1st, 2009.

Full details here.

If you are a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), you are eligible for 50% off Waves tools thanks to Pro Audio Solutions until January 31st, 2009. Details with link to rebate form here.

AGD may be underestimating our audience, but we're willing to be not everybody is a member (don't feel bad, neither are we). But it may be easier than you think to become a member. Hell, you may even qualify now as they have new Digital Distribution qualifications for potential applicants. Wrote 12 songs about your dog and digitally published via Ioda? You could be a member already. PLUS, if you become a member, it means you can vote for the Grammys to prevent atrocities like Jethro Tull getting the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Yes, I'm still bitter.

Variety has a great article on how many films, mostly with Indie leanings, are favoring more subtle sound design rather than manipulating the audience with overwrought string arrangements and cymbal crashes. It's nice to see the sound department getting acknowledged for it's work aside from being almost dead last in the credits at the end of the film or eyes being rolled when we only want 1 minute of silence for room tone on set.

Probably one of my favorite features in Mix Magazine next to the late Stephen St. Croix's "Life in the Fast Lane" is "Classic Tracks". Basically, they talk to the people who recorded those great tunes and what was involved. And thanks to the Internet, they are posting them on their website.

While I have to say that Mix Mag is a bit elitist (if not showing the age of the people who write the articles) , there have been some pretty interesting music productions post 1992 and those productions should be accounted for.

But regardless of my opinion, I'm just happy that Mix magazine has stepped up to this at all. I always find these articles really grounding from a recording and production perspective.

The sheet music is for free for solo piano and in guitar tabs. Download and print and get those chords down for your epic punk cover version. Sing it like Lee Greenwood, Johnny Rotten or Bruce Springsteen, depending on your political affiliation. Yes they printed the lyrics, too.

Don't know how we missed this one folks, but Alfred Shaheen, the inventor of the Hawaiian shirt died last Sunday at age 86 of diabetes.

While Mr. Shaheen was hugely influential in the garment industry, his biggest impact will be in the audio industry. The Hawaiian shirt is pretty much handed out the moment you get behind an audio desk along with the pony tail here in California and rumor has it's not uncommon in other parts of the world.

As someone who used to have a massive collection of Aloha inspired shirts through my audio education, "thank you" Alfred.

It has been confirmed that the RIAA has dumped MediaSentry - known for scrubbing the tawdry digital seas for music pirates - for DtecNet Software ApS to do their dirty work. Judging by the name of DtecNet alone, it's pretty scary looking ...like something you'd see in your background processes hogging 75% of your system resources or putting 1Khz beeps in all your dirty rap.

Since the RIAA announced it wasn't going to sue users anymore, but cut them off that those folks at the ISP level instead, DtecNet probaly offered a more compatible system that can report data of infringers directly to ISPs thus reducing labor costs to the RIAA. At least that's how this stuff *usually* works...but I am only a simple recording guy, so take my opinion as far as you can throw an MTR-90 (that's a big ass 24 track for you youngsters).
